Evidente différence culturelle. Triste désert. Insurmontable ? Heureusement, non. La traduction des auteurs non américains ne résidant pas aux USA est toujours aujourd’hui quantité négligeable. Ce phénomène connu est relayé par The Brooklyn Rail suite à un ouvrage publié par une agence américaine défendant la traduction de la littérature mondiale vers l’anglais : Words Without Borders.
50% of the literature published in translation is translated out of English, while only 6% is translated into it. This apparent lack of interest in anything but ourselves, anything too “ethnic,” too “traditional,” too centered on the culture from which it came is met with a deaf ear.
Après avoir observer les rayons chez Barnes and Noble quant on connaît la passion des éditeurs et lecteurs français pour la littérature étrangère, le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que la différence culturelle est frappante !

Mais ne nous y trompons pas, les choses bougent et les américains s’ouvrent de plus en plus aux autres. Comme une lame de fond silencieuse grâce à un changement profond de comportements et de postures intellectuelles.

Si les produits bio envahissent massivement leurs rayons ou que les Toyota remplissent leurs garages, pourquoi pas une voiture balai avec des livres ?
